Armand Hammer's letter below is a reply to a request from Israeli Prime Minister, Shimon Peres, for documents from the Soviet Union inculpating John Demjanjuk. Despite the repeated requests of Peres and others (as for example, Allan Ryan and Elie Wiesel), the only document that the Soviet Union was able to supply was the Trawniki ID card, a comprehensive discussion of which can be found in the Lubomyr Prytulak letter to Alan Dershowitz of 14-May-2001.

Whereas one might have expected Armand Hammer to use Occidental Petroleum letterhead to conduct Occidental Petroleum business, and personal letterhead to conduct non-Occidental Petroleum correspondence, Armand Hammer appears to see no need to keep the two separate. One wonders whether the shareholders of Occidental Petroleum were aware that their corporation was being tied to one of the greatest miscarriages of justice of the century.

Dear Mr. Minister:

I just returned from the Soviet Union where I held extensive meetings with Prime Minister Ryzhkov, Foreign Minister Shevardnadze, and Secretary Dobrynin. We discussed a wide range of bi-lateral and multi-lateral issues and, while I remain optimistic, much work is to be done to assure a stable relationship, particularly in the arms control field.

At my request, I was provided with the enclosed original document which is the "original identification card of a Nazi war criminal I.N. Demjanjuk No. 1393, given in the SS Training Camp Trawniki (attached)." I hope this helps in the impending trial of Mr. Demjanjuk. The Soviet government asks that this document be returned by me when you have finished with it.
