Ukrainian Weekly   16-May-1999   Leonid Kuchma: Hosni Mubarak of the Slavic world?
What the United States may have planned for Ukraine is to turn Leonid Kuchma into the Hosni Mubarak of the Slavic world, and unless implementation of this plan is stopped now, it may progress to a stage where it is unstoppable.
A country with a police-state press is a dictatorship even though it holds periodic elections involving no worse than moderate manipulation and coercion.  Ukraine has a police-state press; therefore, Ukraine is a dictatorship.

This dictatorship began with the imposition upon Ukraine of Leonid Kuchma as president.  Even though the conventional view may be that Leonid Kuchma is the democratically-elected president of Ukraine, a minority but better-informed view is that he was imposed on Ukraine by the West.  Specifically, Leonid Kuchma had the Ukrainian presidency purchased for him in 1994 by the Americanized Hungarian Jew, George Soros.

Since being handed the reins of power, Leonid Kuchma has utilized his office not to build a strong nation, but to install his Dnipropetrovske mafia in Kyiv, to plunder the Ukrainian economy, and to strangle the Ukrainian press.  If Kuchma wins the presidential elections this fall, it will demonstrate no more than that control of the press is able to induce people to vote themselves into slavery.  If Kuchma wins the presidential elections this fall, Ukraine moves one big step closer to becoming another in the line of economically-stagnant dictatorships valued and supported by the United States for their predictability.  What the United States may have planned for Ukraine is to turn Leonid Kuchma into the Hosni Mubarak of the Slavic world, and unless implementation of this plan is stopped now, it may progress to a stage where it becomes unstoppable.

The fate the Norman Finkelstein envisions for Palestinians is not unlike the fate that the United States has in store for Ukraine:

Trapped in a cantonized homeland that is integrated as a service sector of the world economy, Palestinians will be delivered to the mercies of an Israeli-U.S.-World Bank consortium.  Stripped of every shred of meaningful sovereignty, Palestinian "autonomy" is an extreme projection of the fate that the major industrial powers have in mind for all the world's lesser peoples.  It is the Third World's "nightmare scenario."

The lesson of Palestine is as old as history: applied without mercy or scruple, force works.  (Norman G. Finkelstein, The Rise and Fall of Palestine: A Personal Account of the Intifada Years, University of Minnesota Press, Minneapolis and London, 1996, p. 88)
