Kuchma visit to Germany 18-Jan-2001 to be met with protests.
Leonid Kuchma plans visit to Germany:

Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma plans a three-day visit to Berlin, scheduled to begin Thursday 18-Jan-2001, where he will meet with German President Johannes Rau and Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, as well as bankers and entrepreneurs, and where he will unveil the new offices of Ukraine's embassy in Germany (Kyiv Post, 16-Jan-2001).

However, this visit has already been protested in Ukraine, and will be protested again in Germany, by the Ukraine Without Kuchma committee and other organizations, 22 of which add their names to a letter to Gerhard Schroeder reproduced below.  Protesters ask the German Chancellor to cancel the Kuchma visit so as to demonstrate that Europe has no place for leaders who terrorize, murder, and work to restore totalitarianism.  Schroeder is asked to not grasp the hand of a dictator, and to not have dealings with a man who orders the contract killings of politicians and journalists.

Kutschma raus!

Commoners and student's committee for the protection of the basic law Ukraine without Kuchma!"  In Germany to all German democratic forces!

Four months have already passed since Ukrainian opposition journalist Georgi Gongadze disappeared.  He disappeared suddenly, mysteriously, leaving no trace.  During this long interval, the citizens of Ukraine have been watching, great apprehension mixed with hope, the unsuccessful attempts of the Ukrainian President, the General Public Prosecutor's Office, the Ministry of the Interior, and the Security Service of Ukraine to implement a speedy and impartial investigation into the disappearance of the Editor-in-Chief of "Ukrainska Pravda" (Ukrainian Truth), G. Gongadze.

But all this energy has produced no result.  Although we expect that the ruling powers have something to say to the Ukrainian people, they remain silent.  By now it has become clear to all and you likely are already aware of this that the tape recording, which has been made available to the Special Investigating Committee of parliament by a former officer of the Presidential Guard, Mykola Melnychenko, contains undeniable proof that Leonid Kuchma and an elite unit of the Ministry of the Interior (MVS), under the direct command of the Minister of the Interior, Juri Kravchenko, were the principals and executors in the disappearance of the journalist.

The Ukrainian people are crushed with sorrow, shame, and fear, that their elected representatives commit such dark and criminal acts.  Those in power hope that the people will continue submitting to their attempts to implement dictatorship in Ukraine.  The current situation in Ukraine resembles the last months of Ceaucescu rule in Romania from which conclusion may we be spared!

Is it conceivable that after the publication of such facts, the President of a country which strives for a place in the European Community can still remain in office?  A President who shuts down opposition newspapers, and persecutes opposing political parties, most of all those of the left, and democratic parties.  The answer must be no.  But, unfortunately, such is the case in Ukraine.

Kuchma is planning an official state visit to Germany on January 18.  Will you not be disgusted to meet such a "politician" in your land?  Will you really be able to discuss global problems of European security, or economic coexistence, with a person who is accused in his home country of being the instigator of the murders of journalists and politicians?

On this matter, we call upon you to cancel the visit of Kuchma, and support us in our protest on January 18 at 11 o'clock in front of the Ukrainian Embassy in Berlin, Albrechtstrasse 26 (police permission has been granted).Show us that Europe has no room for state leaders who are unable to refute accusations that they participate in murders, terrorism, and the attempt to rebuild totalitarianism.

Get out, Kuchma!
