Subject: New York Times Ad
Thanks to Lubomyr Onyshkevych (Aug 26/97, Subject: One Last Word!) for
bringing to our attention the ad in the New York Times regarding Ukraine. Of course my attention was particularly arrested by the statement that "the pages of Ukrainian history run red with Jewish blood." I suppose that this is intended to suggest "Jewish blood spilled by Ukrainians." True enough but a more complete and impartial statement would have been:
The pages of Ukrainian history run red with
(1) Jewish blood spilled by Ukrainians for irrational reasons.
(2) Jewish blood spilled by Ukrainians in the course of fighting for
emancipation from slavery.
(3) Jewish blood spilled by Russians, Poles, German Nazis, Jewish Communists.
(4) Ukrainian blood spilled by Jewish Communists.
(5) Ukrainian blood spilled by Jewish agents of Poland.
(6) Ukrainian blood spilled by Russians, Poles, German Nazis.
(7) Ukrainian blood spilled in destroying Naziism, as distinct from being
passively victimized by Naziism.
To mention item (1) alone is a slur and a calumny. To mention all the items is to invite a complicated, but balanced, number count in which item (1) can be demonstrated to hold a very small number, and items (2) to (7) can be demonstrated to contain the big numbers.
