Subject: Re: Ukraine's hidden friend
The various comments on this topic make me now a little more cautious
about being grateful. Now among other things I would like to know:
(1) whether whatever treatment the bulk of the children got in Cuba was
really worth the cost of transporting them there, or whether the cost of
transport would have been better applied to bringing about some permanent
improvement in the children's Ukraine environment;
(2) what the selection criterion was perhaps this was largely not much
more than summer camp for nomenklatura children;
(3) whether the Cuban aid was not really a return for Ukrainian services
rendered.
I guess it doesn't pay to take things at face value. I think that my
attitude for so long has been to notice and to complain about the
maltreatment of Ukraine, that I jump too readily to embrace something that
looks like it might be an expression of good will.
At the same time, I may have been ready to give credence to the original
story because I think I remember reading several decades ago that Castro
was (at least) partly Ukrainian (maybe his father) but I've never heard
that confirmed since the original reading.
