Ukrainophobia:
As my links below indicate, March 2009
has
been a particularly harsh month for Ukrainians -- both in Ukraine and
the
Ukrainian Diaspora. Two issues from the past, which we have failed to
resolve
-- John Demjanjuk and d&d -- are once again rearing their ugly
heads. Both
within the Russian Federation and Ukraine itself, there has been a
furious
onslaught on the Holodomor. Patriotic Ukrainians (who decry that only
36% of
the deputies of the Verkhovna Rada admit to being of Ukrainian origin)
are
being labeled as national socialists and fascists. The Ministry of
Internal
Affairs is being urged to set up repressive structures and policies to
suppress
free speech and Ukrainian history (under the guise of combating racism
and
xenophobia). Things look rather grim.

Holodomor: http://www.willzuzak.ca/tp/holodomor/holodomor.html
Eight links have been archived on the
Holodomor page of my website as indicated below. Steve Komarnyckyj in
England
continues his efforts to publicize the Holodomor. A subscriber to [email protected]
using initials MY
has been posting very insightful youtube videos on the situation in
Ukraine.
The book review on The Foreign Office and the Famine (85 declassified
British
documents on conditions in the Soviet Union between 1932-35) highlights
the
testimony of Andrew Cairns -- a Canadian, who toured the agricultural
areas of
the Soviet Union in the summer of 1932. Several chapters in Iron
Curtain by
modern author/historian Patrick Wright highlight the Holodomor.

d&d: http://www.willzuzak.ca/tp/furman/furman.html
There was one important addition to the
d&d page this past month, indicating that Wasyl Odynsky is,
once again, in
danger of having his citizenship revoked and being deported. We are not
privy
to any other information on this case.

John Demjanjuk: http://www.willzuzak.ca/fc/2001/2001.html
There are eight articles archived on the
German initiative to extradite John Demjanjuk to Germany. As Marta
Onufriv
writes, it is not clear if anyone in Ukraine or in the Diaspora will
rise in
his defense should the extradition succeed and should a trial commence.
