- Disparaging remarks about the Ukrainian independence movement, OUN/UPA and even the massive Maidan demonstrations in Kyiv continue to appear in the Western press. This month Nataliya Vasylyeva, Michael Munk, Doug Bandow and Oleksandr Feldman have nominated themselves to receive the Walter Duranty Award for 2014. Appropriate comments have been added to each of their articles. The excellent article by Anton Shekhovtsov summarizes the Ukrainophobic campaign by a network of pro-Russian agitators in the West.

- In the Genocide category, the Brian Glyn Williams article documents the 1864 Circassian genocide committed by Tsarist Russia in the Sochi area, where the 2014 Winter Olympics are taking place. The accompanying article by Bohdan Klid provides similar information on the genocide of the Chechen nation. Carolyn Harris further discusses the Sochi Olympics from this perspective. The genocidal policies of the Tsarist Russian Empire in the 19th century continued in the Soviet Russian Empire in the 20th century and is continuing in the 21st century as Putin tries to create his Eurasian Union.

- At the Maidan demonstrations in Kyiv, Oleh Tyahnybok (29Dec2013) and Yuriy Lutsenko (22Jan2014) have made very important speeches to the thousands of people demonstrating against the dictatorial regime of Viktor Yanukovych. The speeches are in Ukrainian, but we have provided an English-language translation. To better understand the situation, we would urge readers to listen to and/or read these emotional speeches.

- To document the evolution of the Euromaidan commencing on 21Nov2013, we provide a series of video links to some of the most important events up to the present (01Feb2014). In addition, we provide jpg images of the provisions of the laws illegally rammed through the Verkhovna Rada on 16Jan2014 (in both Ukrainian and English) and of the Verkhovna Rada deputies responsible for its passage. We also provide an English-language list of (detained/arrested/imprisoned/missing/dead/injured) demonstrators until 25Jan2014.

- The Canadian Group for Democracy in Ukraine has requested that the Canadian government apply money laundering sanctions against Politically Exposed Persons (PEPs) in Ukraine's government.
- In her National Post article of 26Jan2014, Ms. Bashuk Hepburn urges Canada to help the Ukrainian people by acting decisively against criminal members of the Yanukovych regime.
