Zuzak GRC Report; Wed., Sep. 05, 2007

(1) Denaturalization and Deportation:

(a) USRL Resolution on d&d: On 11Aug2007 at their biennial convention in Winnipeg, the Ukrainian Self-Reliance League of Canada adopted  a resolution calling on the federal government to abandon the d&d process and issue an apology and financial compensation to the victims of this unjust process. It also calls on the Ukrainian community to support the appeal of the German Canadian Congress by signing the online petition at
http://www.petitiononline.com/ober2007/
asking the federal government to restore the citizenship of Helmut Oberlander

(b) Legal challenge to Odynsky/Katriuk decision: The 14Aug2007 issue of e-Poshta  informed its readers that “B'nai Brith Canada launches legal challenge to government over decision not to revoke citizenship of Odynsky and Katriuk

(c) “ICJ demeans the memory of Tarnopolsky”: An editorial in the 22Aug2007 issue of the Ukrainian News lambasts David Matas of B’nai Brith for challenging the Odynsky/Katriuk decision; as well as the hypocrisy of the International Commission of Jurists, Canadian Section for awarding the Walter S. Tarnopolsky Human Rights Award to Mr. Matas.

(d) Josef Furman of Edmonton passed away on 31Aug2007.

(2) John Demjanjuk: In commemoration of 30 years of persecution by the OSI, the Associated Press reports that “Mr. Demjanjuk may be deported from U.S. soon”. The article in the 26Aug2007 issue of haaretz.com is archived in the Furman Files; as well as in the Demjanjuk Files at
http://www.willzuzak.ca/fc/2001/2001.html

(3) Errors of Omission: An article by Oksana Bashuk Hepburn titled “Crimes of Silence” in the 22Aug2007 issue of the Ukrainian News highlights the extreme reluctance of many people to acknowledge the terrible tragedies and huge losses suffered by the Ukrainian people during the twentieth century. Mrs Hepburn must be commended for doing “her little bit” in correcting erroneous viewpoints and educating the public. It is to be hoped that other people will emulate her example. The article is archived on my website via the Ukrainian News link in the right hand column; as well as the Oksana Bashuk Hepburn link in the left hand column at
