Subject: Canadian involvement in Afghanistan

Dear Sirs:

The Canadian Military has become involved in the conflict in Afghanistan without any consultation with the Canadian people, debates in Parliament or the passing of appropriate legislation.

It has recently been reported in the news media that the Canadian government is planning to extend Canadian Military involvement in Afghanistan for two more years -- until February 2009. I am categorically opposed to this escalation except under the conditions outlined below.

I must be convinced that a sizeable majority (65%) of the inhabitants in the region, where Canadian troops are to be deployed, support such Canadian involvement. This would require the people in the region to vote in a referendum on the issue.

This would obviously require the Canadian Foreign Minister, Peter MacKay, and other Parliamentarians to get involved in discussions with the representatives of the Afghanis in these regions to facilitate such a referendum. Presumably, it would also require the involvement of Canadians, who speak the Afghani language and understand Afghani customs and culture, to act as interpreters and go-betweens.

To summarize: I oppose Canadian Military deployment in Afghanistan unless I can be convinced that the Afghani residents in the region want us there.

Respectfully yours
