Varied reaction to Koran desecration simply weird
On Thursday, half-a-dozen died and many were injured after a suicide
bomber set off a bomb at a Kandahar mosque during a reading of the
Koran, at the funeral for the brother of Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
As CNN reported: "The attacker hid the explosive device under his
turban and detonated it among a group of people who were reading the
Koran."
The blast would surely have scorched and shredded the Koranic text and
inflicted indignities on the holy writ. And yet it's very unlikely
we'll witness mob scenes from angry Muslims, as happened with the
publication of the Muhammad cartoons or the antics of Pastor Terry
Jones.
Some isolated acts of perceived desecration evoke murderous outrage,
while others, amid the carnage, are non-starters. Weird.
