Powerful doofus

Re: ‘Obama’s just as big a doofus as Bush,’ Lorrie Goldstein, May 26, 2011.

The issue of a U.S. president’s IQ was never more visible than with the accident- and gaffe-prone Gerald Ford. Poking fun at Ford’s alleged stupidity was an SNL staple.

During the 1976 presidential debate with Jimmy Carter, Ford lived up to his doofus image when he insisted “There is no Soviet dominance of Eastern Europe” and that Poland was a free country.

Carter, said to boast a stellar IQ, won the election and spent the next four years finding new ways to demoralize his countrymen, proving high IQ and wise leadership don’t always mesh.
