Uganda is no example
Re “Pope OKs condoms” (Nov. 27, 2010): Michael Coren invites us to
compare  “the failure of South Africa with the success of Uganda”
in the battle against AIDS. Uganda, where a 2009 private member’s bill
 bristling with anti-gay legislation is working its way through
 parliament -- for laws that call for life in prison, even the
death
 penalty, for gays and lesbians, and three-years’ jail time for
those
 who know of but fail to report a gay person to police. This
against a
 backdrop of ongoing unabashed persecution of homosexuals by
zealots
 in government and media. Praising Uganda is like hailing a
fascist
 regime for making trains run on time.
