Uganda is no example

Re “Pope OKs condoms” (Nov. 27, 2010): Michael Coren invites us to compare  “the failure of South Africa with the success of Uganda” in the battle against AIDS. Uganda, where a 2009 private member’s bill  bristling with anti-gay legislation is working its way through  parliament -- for laws that call for life in prison, even the death  penalty, for gays and lesbians, and three-years’ jail time for those  who know of but fail to report a gay person to police. This against a  backdrop of ongoing unabashed persecution of homosexuals by zealots  in government and media. Praising Uganda is like hailing a fascist  regime for making trains run on time.

Thumbs down on Uganda

Re: Michael Coren, “Pope OKs condoms,” Edmonton Sun, Nov. 27, 2010. Michael Coren invites us to compare “the failure of South Africa with the success of Uganda” in the battle against AIDS. Uganda, where a 2009 private member’s bill bristling with anti-gay legislation is currently working its way through parliament for laws that call for life in prison, even the death penalty, for gays and Lesbians, as well as three years in jail for those who know of but fail to report a gay person to police. This, against a backdrop of unabashed persecution of homosexuals by zealots in government and media. Praising Uganda is like hailing a fascist regime for making trains run on time.
