Polar nuisances
Style queen Martha Stewart's visit to Churchill to observe polar bears (Martha Stewart brings snacks to
North, Nov. 8, 2010) coincided with an event the
University of Calgary recently hosted in which Inuit elders from Baffin
Island shared their knowledge and experience with attendees.
One elder, a lifelong polar bear hunter, was asked about concerns
voiced in environmental circles of the polar bear becoming an
endangered species. The elder laughed and assured listeners the problem
for his people was too many nuisance polar bears suddenly showing up
uninvited at their seasonal hunting camps.
