Different
party, same mistakes
The Editor:
Re Michael Harris: "Different
party, same mistakes," Ottawa Sun, 15 October 2010.
Twenty years ago, veteran left-wing opinion-maker Gerald Caplan
concluded an op-ed entitled "Mindless cheerleaders for Israel?" [cf.
The Toronto Star, 13 May 1990] with two rhetorical questions.
Caplan asked: "Is there no limit to what Canadian Jewish leaders will
tolerate from Israel? Wrong question. Is there any level of iniquity
they'll fail to celebrate?" Questions that today could just as
legitimately be asked of Prime Minister Harper and Liberal leader
Michael Ignatieff. So abjectly uncritical is their support for the
Jewish state that we can only conclude it is not solely driven by
genuine concern, but also pulled along by baser motives like political
gain or fear.
