Barb should hit the bricks
Re: “Let Barb be Barb,” Rick Bell (Sept. 23, 2010). One of the iconic
images of the 1971 provincial campaign was of Tory leader Peter
Lougheed, handsome and charismatic, bounding up the steps of suburban
homes to introduce himself to fellow citizens. By exercising the
personal touch, the future Alberta premier demonstrated the kind of
hands-on, management style he intended. It was a winning formula. Barb
Higgins could do likewise were she to quit the brie-and-chablis circuit
and go door-knocking. Populist, doorstep campaigning would give her
mayoral run enormous momentum.
