Hapless’ presidency

Re: ‘Obama, the one-term wonder,’ Theo Caldwell, June 17, 2010.

President Obama’s cool detachment in Tuesday’s TV address was disconcerting when measured against the magnitude of that runaway oil gusher in the gulf. True enough, he did try to project the image of an earnestly engaged leader, but his TV performance, long on rhetoric, fell short in terms of concrete specifics.

Under Obama’s leadership, Americans unfortunately are far removed from the days when that ablest of crisis managers, President Roosevelt, rallied their forefathers during the Great Depression and in the aftermath of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The ecological nightmare in the gulf seems likely to firmly attach itself as a metaphor and symbol to his feckless and hapless presidency.
