Canadians discriminate
Re: ‘Hate crime stats don’t tell the whole story,’ Mindelle Jacobs,
June 15, 2010.
Jacobs ends her column exulting that “millions of Canadians [are]
without a discriminatory bone in their bodies.” We discriminate all the
time, in big ways and small, for a hundred different reasons, both good
and bad.
Example: This past winter a wheelchair-bound patient on the curb
outside Calgary’s Tom Baker Centre, unable to use his hands, asked me
to light his cigarette, despite signs clearly prohibiting smoking. I
snubbed him!
As I went to meet my ailing relative, a white-hot rage licked my guts
as I pictured that smoker blithely consuming our valuable health
resources.
