Social grief

A story is told of how the Devil was out walking one fine day with a companion, when they fell in behind a man who suddenly stopped and picked up a shard of redemptive truth off the pavement. “That’s a bad break for you,” his companion noted. “Not at all,” replied the Devil, “I’m going to help him organize around it.” That’s one theological narrative to explain all the social grief in the world that can be sourced to religion.
