Roar against Israel only starts
with Turks
Re: " 'We have nothing to apologize for'; Israel blames Turkey for
deterioration in relations," Edmonton Journal, June 4, 2010.
The Turkish political class has found political gold in the daily agony
that is Palestine. There it is -- the sure path to high approval
ratings! Turks, whether secular or religious, moderate or extreme, are
no longer shy about demonstrating their disapproval over what Israel is
doing to Palestinians.
This just as the Israeli leadership appears almost solipsistic in the
unilateral way they conduct their foreign affairs, and with no honest
and able broker bent on rushing to the scene to reconcile the two
sides, to urge them to adopt a less confrontational posture.
The question is: How long before the so-called "moderate" Arab regimes
emulate the Turkish leaders and jump on this bandwagon to shore up
their own political base by also ramping up the anti-Israel rhetoric,
and so hasten the drift toward the falls?
