A trillion here, a trillion there
In this age of massive bailouts of economies in dire straits -- the
trillion-dollar rescue of the Greek economy by members of the eurozone
being the most recent -- that oft-used saying sourced to U.S. Senator
Everett Dirksen, “A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon
you’re talking about real money,” appears to require some significant
numerical retooling. Surely, it would be more fiscally in keeping with
the vertiginous sums bandied about to bemoan “A trillion here, a
trillion there, and pretty soon you’re talking about real money.”
