The silent Pope
This worldwide child abuse scandal is Pope Benedict's Watergate writ
large (Silent Pope, Defiant Vatican - April 5, 2010; Globe &
Mail). As with Richard Nixon's White House, he fails to realize how
unwieldy the scandal has become and just how far out of its depth the
Vatican has wandered.
Truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth -- however ugly -- is
all that will save his papacy now.

Catholic Church deserves criticism
Cardinal Angelo Sodano, dean of the College of Cardinals, has decried
the "petty gossip" that fuels the Vatican's mushrooming child abuse
scandal. Well, of course that's what's behind it all. Just as the 1972
Watergate break-in was, according to Richard Nixon's press secretary,
just "a third-rate burglary attempt."

Well, of course -- vindictive, petty gossip -- that what’s behind it
all.
Just as the June 1972 Watergate break-in was, according to Richard
Nixon’s press secretary Ronald Ziegler, nothing more than “a third-rate
burglary attempt.”
