Suspended jail term for ex-politician

LAVAL, Que. (CP) -- Guy Belanger, a former Liberal member of the legislature, drew a one-year suspended sentence Thursday for fraud. The court also gave Belanger two years to repay the legislature $58,000 that he received.

Belanger, 56, elected in Laval-des-Rapides riding in 1985 and re-elected in 1989, was found guilty last month of breach of trust and fraud. Belanger resigned his legislature seat in 1992 after undergoing major surgery. The court found that while a legislature member, Belanger had turned in bills and sought compensation for work that was never done.
