The Ukrainian Canadian Congress today declared that it welcomed the recently published statements to the effect that the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, the Honourable Denis Coderre, has asked for a review of Canada's policy of denaturalization and deportation.
The UCC maintains that the federal government should review its denaturalization and deportation policy since it is fundamentally unfair.
The unfairness stems from the fact that the government uses denaturalization and deportation procedures against Canadians who acquired Canadian citizenship half a century ago.
The UCC regrets that some government officials and certain media reports still insist on calling Canadians caught up in this process "Nazi war criminals" when in fact no one has been convicted of any such crimes in Canada.
Ukrainian Canadians, with roots in a country that bore the brunt of Nazi terror during WW II, believe that individuals suspected of war crimes residing in Canada need to be dealt with by the Canadian criminal justice system.
