Dear Editor of National Post:

Israel H. Asper's speech, excerpts of which appeared under "Canada's policy on Israel is shameful" (June 19, 2001), is part of a (pardon the pun) global smoke-screen. The intent is to deflect the repression, brutalization and destruction perpetrated over the past half century against the Palestinian people -- legal occupants of lands overrun by cold-blooded invaders. As well, Mr. Asper seeks to dilute the growing international movement to bring Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to justice on war crimes charges. It is no coincidence that Mr. Asper's bludgeoning of Canadian foreign policy follows on the heels of the BBC's "Panorama" program aired June 17th in which legal experts confirmed that Mr. Sharon is indeed triable under international law for crimes against humanity.
