Although there were no additions to the Holodomor webpage these past two months, there has been a great deal of controversy about the exclusion of the Holodomor as a permanent exhibit in the so-called Canadian Museum for Human Rights being built in Winnipeg. Indeed, UCC has called upon the Federal government to
1. Reconstitute the Museum’s Board of Directors;
2. Conduct an independent review involving all Canada’s ethnic communities;

The article by Mykola Riabchuk is a “must read” for anyone wanting to understand the political-sociological situation in Ukraine. The title “They will not sing” refers to the historical origin of the derogatory term “shantrapa” -- broadly used in Soviet slang to define petty thugs and now being extended to describe the “real thugs” within the Party of Regions, who, by their speech and violent actions, encourage the “lawless element” within society to “deal appropriately” with their enemies.

Riabchuk explains that under Yushchenko’s feckless rule the shantrapa kept a low profile, but since Yanukovych came to power the number of violent crimes against journalists; cases of torture and death while in custody; illegal searches, arrests, detentions and politically motivated interrogations has increased exponentially. The shantrapa within Ukraine has been given free reign.

In my opinion, this is an extremely dangerous phenomenon for Ukraine. This is exactly how the Bolsheviks seized and maintained power for so many years. They defined the prosperous hard-working farmers (kurkuls) and merchants (parasites) as enemies of the people and encouraged the lazy, drunken, lawless “shantrapa” to seize their property and banish the best elements of their society to Siberia. I suspect that this is how most dictators seize and maintain power. This is how Americans are likely to lose their freedom -- to be followed by Canadians.

Although we have done no further analysis of the Trawniki ID card, we have highlighted the three statements of John Demjanjuk to the Munich court. In his latest 22Feb2011 statement, Mr. Demjanjuk threatens to go on a hunger strike, if the Munich Court refuses to request from Russia and Ukraine, File 1627, the 1400 page Soviet MGB/KGB investigative file on his case.
