GRC Report; Wed., Mar. 05, 2008
(1) Holodomor: There
have been no new additions to the
Holodomor Files. However, the details of the “International Remembrance
Flame”
travelling around the world and its sojourn in Canada are being worked
out. The
proposed Canadian itinerary is:
April 18, 2008 (Fri.)
Arrival of the flame in Toronto. (Ceremonial
acceptance of the flame in Canada prior to the opening
of the Holodomor exhibit in Toronto's City
Hall.)
April 20 (Sun.) Winnipeg, MB
Easter break
April 28-29 (Mon.-Tue.) Yorkton - Regina - Saskatoon - North
Battleford, SK
April 30, May 1-2 (Wed.-Fri.) Edmonton - rural areas - Calgary, AB
May 3-4 (Sat.-Sun.) Vernon/Kelowna, Vancouver, BC
May 5 (Mon.) Flame leaves Canada
May 22 (Thu.) Flame returns to Canada (St. Catharines, ON)
May 23 (Fri.) Toronto, ON
May 24 (Sat.) TBD
May 25 (Sun.) Montreal, QC
May 26 (Mon.) Ottawa, ON
May 27 (Tue.) Flame leaves Canada
Another
idea.
St. Patrick's Day is March 17, 2008. The Irish famine of 1740-41 has
some
similarity with the Ukrainian Holodomor of 1932-33. Perhaps some
enterprising
writer could compose an article (or letter to the editor)
congratulating the Irish on St. Patrick's Day, while at the same time
mentioning the two famines in the article. (I suspect that the period
from
mid-March to mid-April 1933 was probably the highest death rate
due to starvation.)
(2)
Denaturalization and Deportation: An
editorial in the
21Feb2008 issue of the Ukrainian News titled “UCC
should oppose unjust
Bill
C-3” decries the re-instatement of “security certificates”,
under which
the
victim has no right to see the charges alleged against him/her. It bears great similarity
to the d&d
process.

(3) CHRC: Two
articles have been
added to these files. One is an article in the 18Feb2008 issue of the
National
Post by Jonathon Kay titled “Richard
Warman and Canada's phony-racism
industry”. Mr. Kay concludes that “When the censors start
churning out
the hate
speech themselves -- that makes them as much a farce as a menace.”
The
other is a response by Wallace
Klinck
to a 20Feb2008 National Post article by Colby Cosh titled "The
CJC's
disingenuous stance".
