(2) Apr. 03-07, 2005 - President of Ukraine, Viktor Yushchenko
and his
American-born wife, Kateryna (Chumachenko) Yushchenko are visiting the
United
States. Ukraine is demanding the repeal of the 1974 Jackson-Vanik trade
measure, which barred the Soviet Union from gaining Most Favored Nation
trade
status because of restrictions on Jewish emigration. (Since its
inception in
1974, the Jackson-Vanik amendment has had very negative consequences
for
Ukraine, starting with increased repression of Ukrainian dissidents and
continuing with debilitating trade restrictions.) Insensitive news
columnists,
such as Peter Savodnik, Ethan S. Burger and Charles W. Sydnor are using
this
issue to continue defaming Ukraine and Ukrainians.

[A very dangerous endeavour, in my opinion, reminiscent of the Allan Ryan - Rekunkov agreement in 1980 and the Serhii Holovaty - Canada agreement in the mid 1990s. Ukraine would be well advised to restrict access of its archives to people of questionable integrity.]
Respectfully yours
