Government Issues Committee Report; Tue., June 17, 2003

(1) On Fri., June 06, 2003, Ludmila Sereditch and Bill Diachuk of UCC-APC attended a meeting with the Honourable Anne McLellan, 12304 – 107 Ave., Edmonton, initiated by five Edmontonians with good connections to the Liberal Party of Canada, to discuss Canada-Ukraine relations. They will report on this meeting separately.

I would recommend that similar meetings be initiated by UCC-APC with Stephen Harper of the Canadian Alliance, Peter MacKay of the Progressive Conservatives and Jack Layton of the New Democratic Party.

(2) Bill Pidruchney is preparing 5000 brochures on the revocation provisions of Bill C-18 imposing two-tier citizenship on six million naturalized Canadians. He expects to distribute it during the June 27, 2003, Multiculturalism Day celebrations at Edmonton City Hall; the July 01, 2003, Canada Day celebrations at the Alberta legislature; and at events throughout the summer as circumstances permit.

(3) The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration has held three meetings on June 05 and June 10, 2003 on clause-by-clause consideration of Bill C-18. They have completed clause 13 before adjourning for the summer. Presumably, the revocation provisions in clauses 16 to 18 will be considered when the House resumes sitting in the fall of 2003.

As they become available, transcripts of these meetings will be archived on my website at:
