Dear Dr. Zuzak,

Thank you kindly for your letter and the enclosed material [concerning the Deschenes Commission]. I read both submissions with great interest. It looks to me that John Sopinka has concentrated his arguments mainly on the legal aspects of the case, while Y. R. Botiuk took a much broader approach by putting considerable effort in discrediting the false accusations of the CJC. Also the attached background documents are very interesting. I hope that you allow me to keep it all for future reference.

While I do not agree with such extremists as Zundel or Keegstra, unfortunately, Jewish propaganda is just as obnoxious to me. They, too, twist the historical facts to serve their purpose. This applies not only to such zealots as Wiesenthal or Kahane, but to the Jewish elite, in general. I read, recently, a new book by Abba Eban, "Heritage, Civilization and the Jews", published in 1984. A prominent Israeli politician and a professor of history, has published cheap political propaganda under the guise of serious historical work.

Anything in the Jewish past that could be regarded as positive, he shamelessly blows out of proportion, but the negative, he either explains away, or simply forgets to mention. For example, Abba Eban, the Historian completely "forgot" to mention the Russian Revolution and the Jewish role in it. But Abba Eban, the Politician, remembers it very well. In 1967, during the debate of the Six Days War in the Security Council of the UN, the Israeli delegate, Abba Eban, shouted at the Soviet delegates: "We made the revolution for you! Without us - you would not have the USSR today".

According to Abba Eban, sometime in the Middle Ages, somewhere in Northern Europe, suddenly appeared the Ashkenazi branch of Jews. But another prominent Jewish author, Arthur Koestler, in his book "The thirteenth Tribe", explains that the Ashkenazis are descendents of a Turkish tribe, the Khazars, who occupied the lower Volga region in ancient times and were converted to Judaism in IV or V century. Since the present Jewish population consists of approximately 75% Ashkenazis and only 25% of Sephardims, the real descendants of biblical Jews, the expression "antisemitism" does not make any sense. The real antisemites are the Jews, because they, largely non-Semites, are the deadly enemies of real Semites: the Arabs.

I better stop right here and now about the Jews, otherwise I will never finish my letter.

Recently, I received two more letters from Danylo, both of them full of hope that he will be able to emigrate after his term expires. According to the best of my knowledge, it takes a minimum of 4 - 5 months in USSR to obtain an exit visa. And since he can apply for it only after Jan. 6, 1987, it means that the earliest we can expect him in Canada is April or May of next year.

Lydia still didn't find employment and it is possible that she will be going east to Ottawa and Toronto looking for work sometime this fall.

We both, Nina and I, feel not bad. Right now [we are] busy with making preserves from our garden for the coming winter.

Thank you for your sincere and friendly attitude, you are wonderful people.

Greetings and best wishes to you both from both of us.

Yours sincerely

Ivan Shumuk
