Under fire
You stand by the water cooler with the office gossip, who
viciously attacks a colleague, who is, in fact, in no sense an
especially terrible person. You conclude: “Wow! Imagine what
she says about me behind my back.” Thereafter, you avoid
hanging around the water cooler. For the
much-maligned colleague, read Michael Ignatieff; for the
vicious gossip-monger, read Stephen Harper and his spate of
TV attack ads; for the alarmed colleague, read a swath of the
electorate for whom this all conspires to give Jack Layton’s
aura of decency an added shine.
