Couldn't stand the heat

In July 1972 we stepped off the plane in Athens after midnight and
walked into a sauna. Our hotel room was an oven; my travel companion
soon used up what little shower water the hotel allowed. For relief, I
stepped out onto the 18th floor balcony. Looking down, I was greeted by
the sight of hotel guests on virtually every balcony below me stretched
out butt-naked asleep on air mattresses. No less surprising was the
notion anyone could sleep with the cacophony from the 2 a.m. rush-hour
traffic.
