Splitting the vote?

Strathmore, Alta. -- Re Volpe Won't Apologize To Tories (on-line edition -- May 4, 2005): Immigration Minister Joe Volpe's feud with Conservative MPs, going so far as to link their party with the Ku Klux Klan, recalls Louisiana's 1991 gubernatorial race, between the former Klansman David Duke and his Democratic rival, Edwin Edwards.

Mr. Edwards had been twice indicted, and had been eventually convicted for bribery and fraud. A political liability? His team cranked out a campaign bumper sticker that said: "Vote the Crook, not the Klan."

Mr. Edwards won.

I expect that in the coming election the Liberals will likewise try to sell themselves as constituting the lesser evil.
