Dear Editor

Re: Ottawa says it won't go easy on suspected Nazis, September 25, 2002

Stripping Canadian citizenship from Nazi war criminals and deporting them is a good idea, no matter how old they are. What is truly abhorrent is stripping the citizenship of someone who has been proved NOT to have been a Nazi, let alone a Nazi war criminal, while going easy on Communist war criminals.

Sending a message that Canada is not a haven for war criminals is good, but is Canada not also sending a message that Ottawa will countenance smear and innuendo to demonstrate Ottawas resolve? What a legacy! Will history remember this Prime Minister not for what he hopes it will or will it remember the Right Hon. Jean Chretien for (among others) his Second World War Denaturalization and Deportation strategy that reveled in selective justice and innuendo?

Sincerely
