Schoolchildren to study in detail
about Holodomor and OUN-UPA
As of September 2009, Ukrainian schoolchildren will take a more
extensive course of the history of the Holodomor and OUN-UPA fighters,
UNIAN reports.
The ministry of education has adopted changes in the History of Ukraine
and World History courses for Year 5-12 students, ZIK reported.
History textbooks will now incorporate new evidence about the 1932-1933
artificial famine and Ukrainian Insurgent Army fighters accumulated by
scholars.
The 20th Century History course that included many blank spots will
undergo many changes thanks to opened archives, something that allowed
to throw light on hitherto unknown facts and events, and the influx
of a younger generation of historians.
According to the ministry, the new course will place more emphasis on
the emergence and struggle waged against the totalitarian Stalin regime
by the Ukrainian nationalist OUN-UPA fighters. Schoolchildren will also
be exposed to new knowledge about the 1932-1933 Holodomor, mass
reprisals by the Communists in the 1920s-50s and the movement of
dissidents in the 1960s.
The new courses will raise schoolchildren’s awareness about the events
of the past as well as enable them to have a better understanding about
the present developments.
