Steinberg's insatiable self-indulgence

February 1, 2004           Faxed to: (613) 995-0770

Hon. Stephen Owen
Minister of Public Works
House of Commons
Ottawa, ON
K1A 0A6

Dear Mr. Minister:

It has come to our attention that your Director General of audits and ethics has been spending tax dollars on dubious technological equipment including a gas plasma TV, a state-of-the art amplifier, DVD player, VCR, assorted "Wall Street" office furniture, a Picture Book, a stylish laptop, computers and fax machines for his residence and a $356 briefcase. Is there anything else that Mr. Steinberg needs to satisfy his insatiable self-indulgences?

We would like to go on record as not only opposing these irresponsible and unwarranted purchases at taxpayers' expense, but also that we suggest you sack Mr. Steinberg before he totally runs amok in your department and squanders untold sums of our hard-earned money.

Members of the Opposition are being copied on this correspondence so that they may have some encouragement that the general public does not believe government bureacracy is the place to reward the government's "pals" or to ingratiate the government's supporters. By the way, can you account for how Mr. Steinberg actually obtained his position?

Yours,

Eugene Harasymiw, LL.B.
