Subject: Action on war criminals

Dear Madame Minister:

Our one thousand member organization seeks assurances from you, as Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, that Canada will not allow one of the world's most notorious war criminals to escape prosecution, or to enter Canada. Should he nonetheless find his way onto our borders, we seek assurances that the Canadian government will act appropriately. The notorious individual of whom we speak, being the perpetrator of heinous crimes against humanity, is Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

As you are doubtless aware, Sharon actively participated in, led or facilitated through his office the following atrocities (used here as samples of his criminality):

1. Qibya, where Sharon perpetrated the massacre of unarmed Palestinian civilians;

2. Sabra and Chatila, where Sharon facilitated the Phalangist militia slaughter of unarmed innocents.

Therefore, it would not be difficult to put together an indictment of his murderous crimes for presentation to the International Court -- if your department requires assistance, we would be pleased to oblige.

In the result, the Alberta Ukrainian Self-Reliance League demands the following in relation to Ariel Sharon:

1. Assurances that the Canadian government will never invite Sharon to our country, based on the fact he is a known war criminal;

2. Assurances that, in the event Sharon lands on Canadian soil, he will immediately be arrested and held till all the necessary paperwork is in place to escort him to face trial before the International War Crimes Tribunal; and

3. Assurances that your government will immediately put together a case for the International War Crimes Tribunal urging that body to arrest Sharon for his murderous crimes, and bring him to trial to account to the world for his actions.

The last time we wrote to you on an urgent matter, Madame Minister, your office took 13 months to respond. That is unacceptable -- we require your immediate action.

Yours truly,

Eugene Harasymiw, LL.B.
