Ohio judge rejects war
criminal's bid for U.S. citizenship
Convicted Nazi war criminal and
retired Cleveland-area autoworker John Demjanjuk will not regain his
U.S. citizenship, a federal judge in Ohio decided Tuesday.
In a German court, Demjanjuk was
convicted earlier this year for serving as a guard at the
Nazis' Sobibor death camp during World War II, a charge he continues to deny. In fact, his
appeal to regain citizenship is based on a claim that a document used
to incriminate him was a Soviet fraud.
The judge in Ohio rejected
Demjanjuk's claim, stating the document theory is "no match" for government
evidence placing Demjanjuk at several concentration camps during the
Holocaust that killed millions of people.
Demjanjuk is free pending an
appeal of his German court conviction and five-year prison sentence.
